Their debut album The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg (2014) became a showcase for the possibilities of pop music informed and inspired by poetry, art and sounds from around the world. Although consistently described as ‘quirky’ and ‘offbeat’, Beatenberg’s unique sound and Matthew’s songwriting also proved to effortlessly own mainstream South African pop: the band’s breakout hit with DJ Clock, ‘Pluto’, had a record-breaking 19 weeks at number 1 and remains a staple; follow up singles like 'Rafael' and 'Beauty Like a Tightened Bow' continued to hold their own in the charts; and in 2015 the band won seven South African Music Awards, including album of the year. Beatenberg was subsequently invited to record and tour with Mumford & Sons in London and New York as well as making appearances on Later with Jools Holland and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

As a songwriter Matthew is also frequent collaborator with Tresor, having co-written ‘Never Let Me Go’, ‘Zambezi’ and the platinum record ‘Aphrodite’ which appeared on Tresor’s 2019 SAMA award-winning album Nostalgia.

M Field’s self titled debut EP, released in September 2021, received a lot of praise form the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, DIY and The Line of Best Fit as well as extensive radio support from BBC Radio 1, 6 Music and Radio X. Following this success,  M Field has now released his much anticipated, incredible second EP Re: M Field along with an official music video for lead track ‘Jolly Roger’
